ONE RACE ENDS ANOTHER BEGINS Kalyn Free Runs Marine Corps Marathon
Kalyn free, candidate for congress for Oklahoma’s 2nd congressional District, successfully ran the 28th annual Marine Corps marathon in D.C., Sunday, October 26.
Free finished the 26.2 mile race in 4:21, and said she was pleased with her performance and is, “strong and ready,” for her next real race referring to her campaign to represent eastern Oklahoma in congress.
Free is delighted that her six month training, which included weekly Saturday morning runs of 18-20 miles is over and she can now focus all her energy on meeting people in Eastern Oklahoma and winning her race.
This is Free’s second marathon, having run the Marine Corps marathon in 1997 in honor of her father who died of lung cancer. Free trained for this marathon to develop the strength and stamina she needs to campaign for the 25 counties, which make up Oklahoma’s second district. Free said that while the daily runs built her physical strength, the long weekend runs gave her the time to think about the hopes, needs, and dreams of the people in eastern Oklahoma, “when I’m out there on those long country roads, running for 3 1/2 hours, I have a lot of time to think -- to think about the direction our country is headed in, to think about the opportunities we want for ourselves and our children, the opportunities for affordable health care, for better schools, for good jobs, and for a safe and secure America. I’m running for congress to give the people of eastern Oklahoma hope and opportunity.”
Free was delighted to have finished the race 30 minutes faster than she did six years ago.
