Washington, DC --- December 10, 2003 --- The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) has endorsed Kalyn Free for Congress in Oklahoma’s Second District.
Representing 5,500 working families in Oklahoma – in the retail, food processing, garment and manufacturing industries – the UFCW is the state’s neighborhood union.
“Kalyn Free will fight for working families in Washington, DC – for livable wages, affordable health care and secure retirements for all workers. The UFCW is proud to put its support behind a fighter for working people,” said David Dunphy, of the UFCW’s Legislative and Political Affairs Department.
“I’m proud to have earned the endorsement of the union representing working families in my community,” said Free. “I believe that working families deserve secure jobs – with wages that can support a family and affordable health benefits.”
Free’s campaign won the support of the nation’s largest private sector union for her commitment to representing the interests of people who work for a living – supporting the increase in the minimum wage and her devotion to attracting and retaining good jobs in her District.
“I thank UFCW for their endorsement and look forward to working with them in the future," Free said. "We can assure America’s future through a stable, growing local workforce.”
“We need to not only bring jobs back to Oklahoma that have been lost, but work with companies to bring more job opportunities to the people of this state,” Free explained. “It is a priority that we strengthen the job market, provide affordable health care and stop wealthy special interests.”
Free, a former district attorney in Oklahoma’s Pittsburg and Haskell counties, worked for ten years in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Environmental Enforcement Section, prosecuting polluters and large corporations that put profits before people.
The 1.4 million member United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) is America's neighborhood union representing workers in neighborhood grocery stores across the country. UFCW puts dinner on the table for America's families with members working in meatpacking and food processing. UFCW gives a voice to care with representation for nurses, medical technicians and nursing homes.
